In short: not even close to being a hit! Word is on everybody's mind, like Blu-Ray, but very little seems to be being done about content production and popularization. I'll say it's gonna get, at least, few more years...if it won't die!

The trip from CRTs to flat screens took over 10 years and a variety of stages such as Standard definition TV in between. The early plasma TVs were up to $40k and were no where as good as what sells for $1k now. You are actually better off to avoid high end features for which there is little content for a few years until the technology advance and format wars are settled. Anyone remember VHS and Beta? Anyone remember DVDs. Technology swings quite far every decade. If you buy what you need for now, you will save enough money to buy the reigning 3D technology when it is available and popular.

In the future all TV will be 3D and be wviewed without glasses. All current 3D sets will be obsoleted. Don't worry about it. Just buy a TV every 5 years. Surely it's not like the TV is the centre of your life? If it is, buy one every 3 years.

Personally, I just don't see a reason for 3D televisions. Once they really become 3D, maybe, but until then, I'm sticking with recommending plain old good quality 2D sets.

Currently i am using 32" LG TV as monitor...not sure if a 40" is too big. i was attracted to the picture quality of quattron the other day in mall... but smallest screen size of quattron is 40".

GET a sony one -- the polar bear demo that look more spherical
other just look like 3 to 5 layers


sony use active battery shutter glasses
LG claim to be less tired with polarised glasses, lighter -- but some LG got a wii remote control

samsung got brighter screen, but some sticker company could provide a sheet to make LG brighter

I bought a LG 4x 'ish this year, I put away my LCD monitor and use my LG tv set for everything -- really everything -- the screen will not be enable you to read more text per line than LCD, even if your eye could (20/20 eyesight) , but you will tend to use control-wheel to make the text bigger and read it more comfortably


should you buy 3D

I see it this way-- thought about that

those blu-ray is expensive (2D or 3D) and only new / pixar movie look better on blu-ray

and 5 blu-ray cost a lot , enough for you to watch 10 times iMax 3D movie

virtual re-created 3D on normal programme is no good

i.e. do you have a big budget to buy everything blu ray and ensure those production and video resolution is good

plus

if your sofa couch to the wall is just less than 10 feet, don't need to buy a huge tv; it will appear huge first month when you use the magnification function
IPTV is also not very good (i.e. tv connect to internet, you could just get a SONY - bluray player instead, got youtube compatibility -- you can play music from VEVO all night long)
I think PC connect to tv set then use pc for internet is better -- like java, twitter add-on etc and typing too


5x 'ish screen and sound bar pricing would come down 2 to 4 years later


i.e. I am satisfied with my budget decision (big tv theater system could be as expensive as a tiny new car)
LG got the cool braclet, I could tilt it any way I want and put it closer to the couch

and if I got another budget, could get a bigger tv set later and see how software and dvd price at that time -- bluray get some normal dvd price down in the shop from time to time


therefore, take some time to think and the budget --- sound system is more important, I got a computer shopping centre cheap base, with nice swivel volume control
as new tv , it is too thin, just 1cm or 2cm, the sound system will be high pitch enable, while the blasting subwoofer is totally vanish

now I put the cheap sound system -- use 3.5mm to connect (cabled, not optic )

to the back of my sofa, so when there is bass sound , my sofa do vibrate a little bit (just put the subwoofer facing the back the sofa, so you get a sound blast with vibration)

in short, sound system is important, video brightness could be enhanced by glaring plastic sheet on top of screen, bracelet for wall mounting is good, VGA or HDMI from computer could connect to the tv set , wii is not HDMI

samsung got the brightness and good resolution , same as sharp or bose --those got thick tv set

LG -- you could touch the screen, without sticker, it could be a bit museum canvas alike
the motion technology , I don't like it as it produce white edges
remote and fine control of picture is good, but definitely has to add a sound system (cheap or expensive) to boost base

sony -- the technology is really cool and all AV is cool, (unlike vaio)
the 3D is fascinating, as good as cinema, but would you pay ticket for cinema or buy expensive blu-ray, cable or satellite, 3D , better watch it in your friend place first, before buying a set

note: regarding last few christmas replies

you can wall mount it

for VIDEO
first, you put it in external hard disk drive that got a USB port

nowaday-- mine is LG
it got a great real, avi mp4 m4v compatible video reader/ software inside tv
it is so good, that media player (PC, for wmv, wmv could be incompatible with new tv product, just like old VHS tape signal) is no comparison

random access is not oke within a video, but could fast forward or fast backward it

you could also connect external hard disc with video
to blu-ray player first (then it might be not real video rmvb compatible) then connect it to tv via the player -- wmv could lost it sounds

i.e. video could be
stored in PC hard disk
stored in thumb solid state memory
stored in DVD-burn it, then play it in player
best is to stored those in external hard disc with USB , then connect it to tv set, but have to remember to disconnect the external hard disc if you don't watch video anymore (music and picture too, but mostly used for video rather than stamp collection photos), you have to disconnect , unplug the USB as the tv set on will turn on the spinning of your external hard disk too, so I think better to disconnect it -- when not in use or connect it via the player

tv set, a leap forward technology available to civilians, better to consider to put away your CRT tv set --- veetle.com has to download and install PC plug in - that tv section is good to preview some programmes too, so plentiful to be watched !!


oooh, I think LED back light technology is vital if you get a new tv these couple of years
as LED back light , with LCD panel -- those LED light will last for 10 years or so, as even 1 LED burn out, it should not affect the brightness

while old LCD use tiny fluorescent tube with white reflection light box technology, once burn out, your tv is gone and new LED tv is so slim, just 2 fingers thick

I have just bought a G35 thinking that the new model would be an improvement on the old model, however after reading this thread it appears that this is not the case and I have been ripped off. Why would you put out a new model that is a retrograde step and then charge an additional 59 to bring the software up to the old version level?
